DSL Magazine: Issue 11

Two decades after the popularization of internet access in the country, three generations of contemporary Chinese artists have produced works exploring, commenting and criticizing different aspects of networked communications - from amateur creativity to consumer interfaces, and from everyday life to national governance. At the time of writing, each of the three generations outlined in this magazine are occupying distinct spaces in art institutions and cultural scenes: more established 70hou pre-internet artists are collected in museums and invited to produce large-scale works internationally; the 80hou generation is increasingly recognized with solo shows and retrospectives, which are starting to identify a cohesive movement; the 90hou post-internet artists, more active around underground scenes and transnational collectives, are carving their own spaces across media and beyond the internet as their forebears knew it. As a fourth generation of 00hou artists start graduating from university and make their claim on the future of China’s digital media, we are excited to see what will come next.
